Thursday the 24th of August, the excavation site at Þingeyri was closed for the winter. The archaeological excavation this summer went incredibly well. The weather was very good, we found many interesting artefacts, as well as some amazing turf walls. The winter will be used to analyze the finds and the structures as well as prepare for next summer.
Both the excavations at Þingeyrar and at Kirkjubæjarklaustur are part of the archaeological research Between man and nature, which received a three-year grant from Rannís. Professor Steinunn Kristjánsdóttir, archaeologist at the Department of Archeology of the University of Iceland, is leading the research.
This year, there were students of all study levels who took part in the excavations, but research like this is very important for students to gain excavation experience and get a summer job within the field they are studying. There were eight undergraduate students, two master students, two post-doctorate researchers (a palaeoecolgist and a zooarchaeologist) as well as our Excavation Manager Dr. Jakob Orri Jónsson.
Fimmtudaginn 24.
